Yesterday the 'Nest was abuzz with speculation about what Rovio's #newangrybirds teasers on Twitter were all about. Today, we have confirmation that the Pink Bird, aka Stella, is getting her own -- likely female-focused -- franchise.

"Best Friends Forever .... Most of the Time"

That's the tagline for Angry Birds Stella that is displayed on the new stella.angrybirds.com landing page. Per the press release, "Angry Birds Stella is all about inspiration, empowerment and other real issues, without forgetting entertainment and quirky fun."This is more than just a game or update, it's a whole new franchise. "Angry Birds Stella will bring fans a wide range of entertainment across multiple media, such as games, animation, toys, books and other retail products for many years to come."So what does this mean for us super flingers? Well, the press release does mention 'games', but it's hard to say for sure what type of games they are referring to. I would definitely be surprised if this spinoff didn't include a new mobile game however. But as we all know, not all mobile games are created equal, so let's hope it's something we can all enjoy as a community!I for one am excited to see what's to come. How about you? Let us know below.Angry Birds Stella Poster The Mysterious Stella Stella and Friends

Welcome to the inagural Angry Birds News Roundup brought do you by @Dr-Omega. These news bulletin's are designed to offer you a recap of new and interesting Angry Birds and / or Rovio news that may have flown under the radar.Disclaimer: Artist interpretation. This is NOT an official image from Rovio or Hasbro.

Angry Birds Transformers

We previously reported that the Idle Hands blog obtained a list of upcoming Hasbro products from the UK Toy Fair that included a brief listing for Angry Birds Transformers toys coming in September. After some digging, it was found that in November 2013, a coding error on the Hasbro page allowed a G.I.Joe fan to see a large list of upcoming Hasbro products. Allspark.com user Monzo obtained the list in the same manner and extracted the list of Transformers toys and posted the list online. The list includes the following:Mobile
  • TRA AB RACER HELMET PIG ADRIAN A8457
  • TRA AB RACER MUSTACHE PIG MAX A8456
  • TRA AB RACER RED BIRD OPTIMUS A8447
  • TRA AB RACER SOUNDWAVE CHEF PIG A8459
  • TRA AB RACER TERENCE HEATWAVE A8453
  • TRA AB RACER YELLOW BIRD BUMBLEBEE A8448
  • TRA AB RACERS AST A8387
  • TRA AB UNICRON RACE SET A8386
Angry Birds Boys Gaming
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF AERIAL ASSAULT A7639
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF JENGA BUMBLEBEE GAME A7639
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF JENGA GAME PACKS A9262
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF JENGA OPTIMUS GAME A9261
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF JENGA VEHICLES AST A7873
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF VEHICLE GALVATRON A9267
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF VEHICLE HEATWAVE A9264
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF VEHICLE LOCKDOWN A9265
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TF VEHICLE SOUNDWAVE A9266
  • ANGRY BIRDS GO TRANSFORMERS ROWDY RACERS A7873
This information seems to confirm what was suspected from the previous listings, that these toys will be an update or offshoot of Angry Birds GO!. It is presumed that Hasbro will not release information about this line during Toy Fair and will instead wait for Rovio to make a public announcement first. The September timeframe announced on the Idle Hands blog would put their release not long after the release of Transformers: Age of Extinction, the fourth live action film from the Transformers franchise, on June 27, 2014.However, Rovio has already announced they would release Angry Birds Stella in the fall of 2014, so it would seem unlikely they would release two new games so close to each other. It should be noted that although appearing in different forms on two separate sites, this information should still be considered unconfirmed until we hear further word from Rovio or Hasbro. When asked for comment on Twitter, Rovio did not respond.

Angry Birds Stella Telepods

In other Hasbro / Angry Birds news, after Rovio's stunning announcement, teasing the upcoming Angry Birds Stella franchise, Hasbro followed up with their announcement regarding Stella Telepods. This comes just days before the 2014 New York Toy Fair, where toy companies unveil their upcoming products to a select audience. While cameras are generally not allowed to record items exhibited during the show, Hasbro invited the press to their 2014 Entertainment Brand Preview the day before Toy Fair starts. It does not appear that any Angry Birds toys were displayed, but an image from Hasbro's presentation showing the Stella Telepods was posted to the Internet on the transformers fan site, www.tfw2005.com, that allows us our first real view of the Telepods:Angry Birds Stella Telepods by Hasbro Teaser Image but that Unfortunately, despite exhaustive research attempts, the names of the new Stella characters have not been found. Toy Fair runs from February 16 - 19. It is hoped that additional information or images will be released during this time. As always, we will bring you any updates, as they come.

Angry Birds GO! - GOing Places, or already GOne?

Angry Birds GO! was only released a few months ago, but as we recently reported, there appears to be a Transformers-based update in the works for fall 2014. But is there another update in the works coming sooner? Nester @adrianchau found a batch of Series 2 Angry Birds GO! Telepods at a local toy store. Interestingly, some of the vehicles appear to be snowmobiles.Could this mean a winter update is coming as us in the West approach Spring? Rovio previously announced that a multiplayer option would be added in the spring. It's possible that these Telepods could be for that update, just released early to stores (not the first time for Hasbro). Check out all of @adrianchau's Series 2 Telepods here.In the meantime, the latest update to Angry Birds GO! has made some configuration changes that have racers seeing red (the color, not the bird). I put it to you, fellow flingers, are you enjoying the game or are you finding it frustrating? Share your impressions on the Angry Birds GO! Forum.

Stellapods Video from the New York Toy Fair 2014

As a follow up to our last report on the Angry Birds Stella Telepods, @greeny356 found a video from ChipChick showing the Stella Telepods in action at the New York Toy Fair. It's also gives us our first good look at Hasbro's Stella toy line up.@miezko also found this video and another which gives us our first confirmed names from the game: Luca, Willow, Poppy and what appears to be Gale (the Queen character). Also, the demonstration shows the birds being launched from a swingset rather than a slingshot. It will be interesting to see if this be the new Stella launching system!Great work you two!Coming full circle, the video below shows an almost verbatim demonstration from the Hasbro rep; however, it also shows the Angry Birds GO! Series 2 Telepods at the end.

As Rovio continues to expand Angry Birds as a worldwide entertainment franchise, they continue to venture into several new areas. With a theatrical movie coming, a soft drink line that continues to grow, and of course the games we all know and love, it’s easy to overlook some of the products available.  One of the areas you wouldn’t immediately think of are books.  Rovio has released a catalog and highlights of books available or coming in spring 2014 on their site that show a wide range of books that appeal to a wide variety of fans. While aimed at a younger audience, the books look to be fun for all ages.  There are several types: Activity books, story books, cook books, arts and crafts and more, such as the tantalizingly titled, "Bad Piggies Book of Wisdom. How to live like a pig."If you are a fan of the Angry Birds and Bad Piggies, there is a lot of information to learn about your favorite characters, such as the names of the Angry Birds Stella cast:StellabookWhat else can you expect from the books?   Pirates, pirates, pirates!  Rovio continues its love of a pirate theme with several of the upcoming books (also check out this week’s Angry Birds Friends tournament for even more Angry Birds and Bad Piggies Pirate action).PiratesPiratesPiratesWhat do you think, fellow flingers?  Will you be updating your personal library with any of the Angry Birds books?  Discuss in the replies below.

Confirmed! The first Angry Birds Stella Game is Coming this Fall. Plus, a First Glimpse at an Actual Level

Rovio has confirmed with a Tweet that the first game in the Angry Birds Stella franchise is due out this Fall. The fall time frame isn't new, but the fact that they have confirmed a game release is. AND THIS JUST IN they have now revealed the first ever level from the game: I'm sure most of you will be super excited to see a slingshot! Wow! This level is gorgeous. Super colorful and looks to be full of interesting items. Like those pink blocks. It looks like Stella can target and bounce off of them. Or maybe this is showing Stella using a Power Up, as there is a silver anvil on the top left that has the lightning bolt inside. And what's up with that Golden Frog (with tail I should add)? Is that something to collect or simply a decoration. What else do you guys see? Let us know in the comments below.https://twitter.com/AngryBirds/status/474155135137230848Thanks to @iBird for sharing a link to Rovio's blog post. A nice snippet reveals that we should expect the game in September, 2014.
You’ll first meet Stella and friends in September in a totally new game, which will have new powers to challenge even the hardened Angry Birds veterans. In November there’s a new animation series of thirteen six minute episodes which you can watch on the ToonsTV channel, TV and other video services. There will be Hasbro TELEPODS figures powered by Retoy, a series of books and all kinds of exciting stuff coming your way before the end of this year!
The names of the birds isn't necessarily new either, but in case you haven't seen them they are:
  • Luca (blue)
  • Poppy (Yellow)
  • Dahlia (is that bronze / brown?)
  • Willow (Blue w/ Beanie)
  • Stella (Pink)
  • Gale (Purple)
What do you think? Are you looking forward to playing Angry Birds Stella? Based on the level I most definitely am.If you're looking for additional news on Angry Birds Stella click here.

Introducing Gale from Angry Birds Stella

Rovio released a new Angry Birds Stella animation today that's all about Gale (the purple bird). It doesn't really tell us anything we didn't already know, but it's a fun reveal nonetheless. If you haven't been keeping up Gale is to Stella what Loki is to Thor (I imagine many of you will not agree with this analogy, but it's the best I could come up with this morning).Per YouTube:
She's the baddest bird on Golden Island, and has her very own army of Minion Pigs – meet Gale, a.k.a Bad Princess!
Gale used to be best friends with Stella, but now she flies down a darker path of pride, vanity and greed. Her obsession with gold is all consuming, and there’s almost nothing she won’t do to get what she wants...
What do you think? OH! And is it just me or does Gale look a bit like Maleficent?

Introducing Luca from Angry Birds Stella

Rovio released a new Angry Birds Stella animation today that's all about Luca (the blue bird), the only boy of the flock. It doesn't really tell us anything we didn't already know, but it's a fun reveal nonetheless.Per YouTube:
He’s the only boy in the flock and also the youngest, but don’t call him a baby – his name’s Luca! He’s a playful and inquisitive little fella, which means he loves to explore (and often finds himself in sticky situations). Luca may be quiet, but he actually has quite a pair of lungs on him, so cover your ears when he does his Soundwave Shock!

Rovio released a new Angry Birds Stella animation today that's all about Dahlia, the brains of the bunch.. It doesn't really tell us anything we didn't already know, but it's a fun reveal nonetheless.Per YouTube:
She’s constantly working on some kind of crazy project and always seems to know just the right formula to get herself out of a jam. Be careful though – if she gets angry, she’ll stun you with Science-Fu! In fact, maybe it’s best to steer clear of her lab altogether…

Angry Birds Stella Hands on First Look at the First 7 Levels

$
0
0

Earlier today I took Rovio and Barnes & Noble up on their offer to play Angry Birds Stella a wee-bit early (see our mention of this from yesterday). Anyhow, above is raw footage of me actually playing Stella for the first time. I'm sorry for the shaky camera footage, but it's tough playing a new game while also recording from you phone -- all while standing. Remember, this is raw footage, so bear with me as I learn how to navigate the game.I have to say playing Stella was quite intimidating at first, and I still don't get it all, but that's not to say it wasn't fun. Quite the opposite actually. It IS really fun, well executed, and best of all the gameplay is familiar (but different enough that it doesn't feel like a copy).Below are some of my initial observations in list form (feel free to leave a comment with things I may have missed):
  • There don't seem to be any episodes per se, though it's hard to say for sure. After you pass level 11 there is a final "Wall of Pigs" level, which is sort of like a boss fight / golden egg level. Once you beat the Wall of Pigs I the next block of levels is revealed, which in this case unlocks Poppy (the yellow bird).
  • The one, two, and three star thresholds are not secret and as you earn points it shows you how much you have left to hit them.
  • At first I thought you get as many birds as you like (about 00:04:30 om the video I am just flinging away), but once you pass level four the line up is set and all birds remaining after you pass the level earn you the customary 10,000 points. With that said, you can swap birds using coins and Telepods, ala Angry Birds Star Wars 2.
  • Free coins float up in bubbles that you can pop with your finger (nice touch -- zing!).
  • Some (all?) of the birds' abilities allow you to tap and hold, which allows for more precise aiming. For example, for Poppy's tornado of destruction you can tap and hold to slow her down and aim, then after a few seconds things start to speed up again. Pretty nifty and helpful.
  • The Credits menu has a fun "Keep the Pigs up in the Air" mini-game (video of this coming soon). I am a real sucker for little things like this.
  • The menus are very well animated and tie in nicely to the Angry Birds Universe, much like Epic.
  • Much like Angry Birds Friends and Epic you'll be able to compete against your Facebook friends, as well as see their scores. As usual, the real battles will happen here on the Nest though. :)
  • After you complete a level the total number of stars you've earned appears at the top. Earning a certain number of stars unlocks rewards.
  • At 00:06:41 in the video notice the brown block in the top right has a camera on it. Smashing this blocks unlocks takes a snapshot that appears in your photo album. This photo album allows you to change the version of the character. It's not shown in this video but later on I unlocked a version of Stella that is wearing a black wig.
In closing, more than ever I am looking forward to Stella's release on September 4th! Please watch the video and let us know what you think of the gameplay (don't insult my wobbly hands though).

Stella Hidden Mini-Game | Keep the Pigs in the Air

This is awesome! Hidden in the credits of Angry Birds Stella you will find a fun mini-game where the objective is to keep the pigs up in the air. Now, one thing is missing, a score. I say we petition Rovio to add a score counter to this so we can all compete. Who's with me?

Angry Birds Stella is Out Now! Fling Your Way Across the Golden Island

The wait is finally over -- Angry Birds Stella is out now for iOS and Android via Google Play, NOOK, and Blackberry 10 with Windows Phone coming soon! Download the app now and join Stella and her friends Dahlia, Poppy, Willow and Luca in their battle to defend the Golden Island from Gale and her band of portly pigs.
Important! Currently, your score is ONLY shown when you complete the level. In other words, it's not shown in the top right of the screen like normal. Until this is fixed, I recommend you note your score and grab a screenshot before the level exits. We have informed Rovio of this, so hopefully it is changed.
• • •
Let's jump right into it shall we!At this time we aren't exactly sure how many levels there are, but Stella is broken down into two main episodes. In the first episode each batch of levels introduces a new bird and is finished off with a super fun "Wall of Pigs" level. At the end of the first episode there is "Giant Gold Flower" bonus level. All told, episode one contains sixty normal levels, five Wall of Pigs, and one bonus level -- so 66 levels in all. Wow! We will update this as we know more about episode 2, which is Beach Day.While Stella gameplay is familiar, there are a number of things that take some getting used to. The fact that your highscore is NOT displayed while playing a level is by far the biggest (how do I improve my score or compete against my friends?). I just can't imagine that was intentional. Anyhow, I digress. The other big difference is that you don't just tap to trigger a bird's ability, rather you tap AND hold. While this takes some getting used to -- especially with Dahlia and Willow -- it's actually really cool and I find it quite helpful. It goes without saying, but Angry Birds Stella is story driven, so it follows a more linear path than the other Angry Birds flinger apps. As you progress through episode one each area reveals a new character and their house. Let's break those down.

Birds + Abilities (in order of appearance)

Angry Birds Stella Character Stella

Stella | Superpower: Pink Flash

She will ricochet off various types of materials, but not all (e.g. glass).
Angry Birds Stella Character Poppy

Poppy | Superpower: Tornado Dive

Unlocked after level 12. She goes wild and spins straight down through most types of blocks, but better through wood and glass.
Angry Birds Stella Character Luca

Luca | Superpower: Soundwave Shock

Unlocked after level 23. His sonic blast shatters glass and goes through wood effectively. It doesn't travel through stone.
Angry Birds Stella Character Willow

Willow | Superpower: Vortex Spin

Unlocked after level 34. As you tap and hold he pivots and upon release she saws through wood and glass like a knife through butter, but they will alter her trajectory. Definitely a bit tricky to get used to.
Angry Birds Stella Character Dahlia

Dahlia | Superpower: Science-Fu

Unlocked after level 47. This is a neat ability, but also tricky to master at first. The key here is to remember that she will teleport in the direction she is headed. Tap and hold and then release when she's where you want her.
Now that we have Stella and friends out of the way let's figure out some ways to master the actual gameplay.

Gameplay Tips

  • As I mentioned above, when triggering a bird's ability you can now tap and HOLD for a certain amount of time. This allows you to aim more precisely and get an idea of the bird's trajectory and final destination.
  • The total number of stars you've accumulated is shown in the top left corner. Earning stars is important as the extra birds in your line-up are unlocked when you achieve a certain number. Without these extra birds you don't get your 10,000 point bonuses.
  • You can bounce off large drums and still use the birds' ability afterwards.
  • Look for sparkling flowers and try to destroy them, as they will earn you 3,000 points each.

Other Useful Info

  • At this time we are unsure if there are any hidden items to collect (ala, Golden Eggs).
  • The scrapbook allows you to access the characters and costumes you've unlocked
  • There is a hammer Power Up that is first unlocked on level 13. After using it it takes a certain amount of time for it to recharge or you can spend coins and use it immediately.
  • As you enter new areas a smoke screen comes up that forces you to either wait a certain amount of time or spend coins to proceed. See screenshot below.
  • Certain pigs release floating coins. Either tap them or simply wait for the bubble to pop.
  • Your earn bonus coins each time you beat a Wall of Pigs level. The amount varies by level.
  • Starting with level 5 the scores required to earn 1, 2, and 3 stars are revealed and the line up of birds is set.
  • No Rovio Accounts option ... yet.
  • You can connect to Facebook and compete against your friends; however, currently your scores are only shown upon completing a level.
  • Game Center support with achievements and leaderboards.
  • Let us know if you find any other mini-games, such as the one in the credits that we revealed here.

So there we have it! Angry Birds Stella definitely doesn't disappoint. It's a fun new adventure that offers enjoyable gameplay and an immersive story. My only real gripe is that I want it to be easier to see my scores so I can improve them and compete with others! I'm sure you will all agree. Now it's your turn. Share your thoughts below? Did we miss something? We want to know that too!

Angry Birds Stella appears to be (at first) marketed to the fairer ones among us, and the intention to create a product specially for the ladies is reflected in Rovio's community outreach efforts and advertising thus far.And while I tend to favor the feminist approach to just about everything in life, I don't believe it's appropriate to say Stella is a "girl's game". Yes, there are a lot of some pink overtones, pleasantly pastel environments and an increased level of character customization reminiscent of a dress up game (all quite stereotypical of games aimed towards the female playerbase), but at its core, Stella is one truthfully furious avian and gameplay involves Desperate House-birds standing up for themselves against home-invading pigs from the sky and making bacon out of them with outrageous superpowers straight out of a Hollywood action movie! In other words, you could say it's like Charlie's Angels, only Pigger! Except there are no Michael Bay-style oversized explosions all over the place. No sir, Stella is all tactical and stuff, and having a decently established gaming career in the sci-fi genre over the past two decades, I could truthfully say this paradigm shift in modern furious avianism involves thinking out of the box like a 24th Century Starfleet officer. I'm looking at you, Captain Janeway!

Angry Birds: Combat Evolved

From zero-gravity shenanigans in Angry Birds: Space to Jedi powers in Angry Birds Star Wars (2), character special powers have gotten more complex and spectacular with each new Angry Birds game. Reminiscent of a military modernization program, a small part of these advanced combat capabilities had been 'retrofitted' to classic Angry Birds in Red's Mighty Feathers, along with of course our infamous Bad Piggies contraptions including such favorite nonsense of mine like ROFLcopters and OMGtanks. In the first five minutes of my Stella experience, it looked like Rovio took all the abovementioned gradual evolution in Angry Bird special powers and turned them up to eleven on Golden Island, arming cute schoolgirls with massive Gauss Rifles from Mechwarrior, and teaching elementary science Quantum Tunnelling concepts to teleport Photon Torpedoes into enemy installations. All that, on top of having a master's degree in temporal mechanics, giving the ability to slow or even freeze time, making me wonder if our cute little birds here have somehow managed to hack into the Matrix to alter school timetables, give themselves "A" in every subject and of course, as a side benefit, give the porcine invaders virtually no opportunity to take cover before a GDI Ion Cannon disintegrates them into their component lard molecules. And I am serious and have screenshots to prove it! Read on!But before we utilize such advanced warfighting concepts, we need to consider the environment, first.

The Operating Environment

It is currently not known where Golden Island actually is, but it must be some sort of offshore island paradise where the Bad Piggies are mere servants (or at best, mercenaries) under evil Gale's control. The in-game cutscenes - which, most entertainingly as usual, have no narration or background story whatsoever, do not give any hints as to whether Ms. Gale is an usurper to the avian throne, or everyone's favorite frustrated schoolmistress utilizing porcine mercenaries to confiscate stuff from "badly behaved" schoolchildren. Yes, I made all of that up without reading anything online because I am one lazy pig. Self-justification aside, imagination is part of the fun when following Rovio's games, after all, it's your gameplay experience - make your own story!Puttering about on an airship reminiscent of wacky Pigtorian concepts of aviation, but without the 100% Epig Fail potential, the mechanic pigs here appear to be refreshingly competent as well. And check out that awesome retro hairdo!
Angry Birds Stella Airship

We get signal! Somebody set us up the bomb!

Players familiar with Angry Birds would have no problem navigating the levels of Angry Birds Stella with tried and true radical restructuring methods (thanks, Republic Commando!), with the exception of small pockets of bacon hidden behind impenetrable obstacles like Kashyyyk-style ancient trees that are best left untouched lest we spark the ire of all those self-appointed environmentalists out there... as though they're not angry enough! With environmental concerns outruling the use of classic brute-force Angry Bird aggressive negotiation techniques, our furious little heroines have turned to a new method of eco-friendly warfare to turn the tide against the airborne pig forces.
Angry Birds Stella - Lucas

Unlicensed pig development sighted! Commence radical restructuring!

Small Birds, Big Power

Since Golden Island is some sort of tropical rainforest paradise, it is in the Angry Birds' best interests to protect said paradise, and the recently-detected porcine infestation, for lack of a better term, surgically removed then cooked for breakfast. With heavy ordnance being replaced by Small Diameter Bombs in the United States Air Force in the interest of reducing collateral damage, the Angry Birds too have refined precision strike capability to engage bacon insurgents in deep cover without causing damage to the rainforest. We start off with Stella herself.

Stella: Reloaded

Angry Birds Stella Character Card

Pink Bird Mk.2 - Now with OCP advanced targeting systems pre-installed at no extra cost! Minimal side effects!

In earlier iterations of Angry Birds, Stella's special power involved taking a very soft approach to the act of popping pigs, at least in comparison to high explosives and kinetic penetrators utilized by the other Birds. This time, Stella was so furious that the earlier "soft approach" soon gave way to a Pandora's Box combination of precision in-flight re-targeting (a feat many modern aircraft munitions would find challenging) and a ridiculously fun rebound-boost ability.Stella doesn't pop pigs by the first, "primary" impact. Her low velocity, lightweight impact would only tickle one's bacon. Stella instead accelerates to maximum speed whist rebounding after impact, creating a deadly 'back handed' strike to whichever pig is unfortunate enough to be in the way! Backstroke of the West, anyone?Ricochet shots in the real world are random at best, but in the world of RoboCop, advanced ballistics computers gives our favorite cyborg policeman the ability to ricochet pistol shots off nearby walls with unparalleled precision, taking a hostage-taker by fatal surprise at least once, maximum deadly pun intended. Now you too can benefit from Omni Consumer Products targeting technology to dish out justice on Golden Island!
Robocop ricochet shot in Angry Birds Stella

It's just like Robocop's ricochet shot, only pigger!

And did we mention something about bullet time? That's right, you can setup ridiculously complex rebound trajectories at your own pace with the all-new Matrix inspired time stop function! So, RoboCop and the Matrix combine forces to bring you one very cute and very deadly guided missile. Wait, I'm thinking she's more like RoboCop in the Matrix! OMG! We're off to a great off-topic start, aren't we?

Poppy 2-B

Angry Birds Stella - Poppy

It's like the Tasmanian Devil combined with the precision of a GDI Ion Cannon strike!

Poppy is the second of the Angry Birds to be unleashed in the game, and her Tornado Dive should instantly evoke memories of the Tasmanian Devil in you!Otherwise, if you are a keen follower of modern warfare, you would also be familiar with Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) technology, most prolifically utilized in the TOW-2B antitank missile and the CBU-97 anti-armor munition. Overflying a tank and firing projectiles into the top of it has the effect of bypassing the majority of the tank's armor protection. How does that translate to gameplay? One word - brilliant! Poppy's top-down Tasmanian Devil Drill attack bypasses the reinforced façades of pig-built buildings and has the added bonus of Stella's Matrix-style bullet time effect to place your EFPs right where you need them to be! It's just like the Ion Cannon in Command & Conquer, with 11 additional herbs and spices!

Lucas' Gauss Rifle

Angry Birds Stella Lucas

Gauss Rifle!!!

Lucas Electronics may not have the best reputation for reliability in automotive applications, but Lucas' Gauss Rifle sure does make a mark upon those atrocious unlicensed high rise porcine apartment blocks popping up all over the place!Right, it's called the Soundwave Shock, but why do I insist on referring it to a Gauss Rifle? Simple - it looks like one! The Gauss Rifle animation in Mechwarrior 4 consists of a bright blue glowing spiral that gives a whole new definition of "Reach Out and Touch Someone" whenever, wherever, AT&T style. Against skilled gunners armed with multiple Light Gauss weapons, the Pigs would be missing missile racks and a multitude of crucial 'Mech components even before they reached visual range... but that's a story for another time when Pigs and Birds pilot huge robotic war machines in the 31st Century!Gauss rifles do tremendous damage due to the sheer armor penetrating ability of a hypervelocity slug, which is nicely simulated in Angry Birds Stella by virtue of its unique "refraction" ability - you can smash through dozens of glass panels at once!

That's what I'm talking about! Refraction!

Willow's Flying Pillow

Angry Birds Stella Willow

No it's not a Pillow, but a Willow!

When I have time, I'd love to draw Willow on a Pillow because, look! They rhyme! How amazing! But what's more amazing is the sheer versatility of Willow's Spinning Pillow attack! Not just capable of plowing through porcine apartment blocks like a hot knife through butter, she is also more maneuverable than a thrust-vectoring Sukhoi fighter jet and can twirl around in mid-air to strike those pesky, hard to reach bacon infestations right where they least expect to be popped! It's just like the Blaster Bomb in X-Com, only pigger!Besides being able to conduct multi-vector assaults on enemy pig fortifications, Willow can also attack hard targets with an impact fuze - meaning to say, she activates her superpower whenever she hits something! Great for confined spaces or when torpedoes are not available - just send her down the Death Star's exhaust port and auto-activate!
Angry Birds Stella - Willow

That look of "I'm gonna become bacon!"

Why do I call her a Pillow? Well, it's about mass, or lack thereof. Be careful of dense materials like stone, for Willow would bounce off dense objects like a pillow and ricochet off randomly!Easter Egg - Launch Willow on a high trajectory, touch the screen and hold! She will go round and round somersaulting endlessly in the air! And then when the pigs get all distracted and stare at your impromptu airshow, release your finger and unleash the full extent of your pillow fury on them! NYC Pillow Fight style!

Dahlia - Science Fun!

Angry Birds Stella Dahlia

More like Science FUN!

The subject of my last character review for now is Dahlia, everyone's favorite science major who has spent all her evenings watching Star Trek for the past several years! While some of her classmates mock her for being overly geekly, Dahlia has saved many a bird from becoming KFC by her spectacular practical implementation of quantum tunneling! At first a getaway tactic, "transporter" technology proved invaluable in the conduct of guerilla warfare against the porcine invaders, teaching them they can surely run, but they can't hide from the powers of SCIENCE!While most scientists would don lab coats and work on special weapons projects far from the battlefront, Dahlia instead showcases her scientific prowess in the field of battle, personally striking at pork camps with the power of a photon torpedo where no bird has gone before!Dahlia's Science-Fu power is not just great for striking at the enemy behind normally impenetrable cover, but also great for blowing stuff sky-high! Check out this hover-sled I "made" for the piggies! Fly piggies FLY!
Angry Birds Stella Flying Pigs

Look ma! Flying pigs!

Conclusion

I wanted to write a 'different sort' of game review, one that doesn't take itself seriously and one that isn't constrained by format, brand loyalty or even time - this review, at the time of writing has been sitting in a corner of my mind for three whole weeks! I don't expect it to be popular but I wanted to showcase how a gamer's mind associates a new game's sights and sounds with what said gamer finds appealing from exposure to other titles and franchises.Just like how the blockbuster movies of today take big and small cues from successful films of yesteryear, a truly great game should tie in, unobtrusively and subtly, to many other positive influences from games that were back in the day influential or innovative in their own right. That's what separates the popular games, to the truly great games that will be classics of tomorrow. Gaming to me is never about jumping from title to title, keeping up what's hot today and throwing away what came before it just a few months or years ago. Hence, I enjoy tracing out a given path of evolution, or making seemingly off-topic references to other franchises altogether. I give credit where due.Gaming, for some people, is not just a mere hobby. It can be a most welcome and healthy distraction from an oppressive culture or environment, and additionally be a very strong reminder that somewhere out there is a world actually worth living for. Again, the need to form connections. That's why, in my short tenure at the helm of a Bad Piggies community, I have strived to not just enjoy the game but also make full use of whatever Rovio has made for us. In terms of Stella and my approach to play and review the game... well, I just love my Gauss Rifles and Ion Cannons - they were effective weapon systems back in the day where we fought against Clan invasions and the Brotherhood of NOD - and they are still highly effective today in a vastly miniaturized form! But jokes aside, it is important as we progress through the 21st Century that we learn not to stereotype - yes, Stella was designed with a primarily female playerbase in mind, hence, Rovio's distinctive marketing strategy focusing on younger girls. But just because it "looks pretty" doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed by anyone.Enjoying a game takes place on a personal level. It's not about how the developer thinks or what the marketing department thinks is the "target audience". Enjoying a game is about how you, and no one else, perceives the qualities of the game, how it affects you, and how you associate yourself with it. One person's cutesy little casual game, is another person's ticket to remembering a pleasant past experience in the world of science fiction. And with it, maybe a stepping stone to something better...

A Piggy Review of Angry Birds Stella Episodes 1 and 2

Welcome to Piggy Reviews! Where everything below is controversial and pig-written, so tread with caution!Angry Birds Stella - The Animated Series started off strong last week with "A Fork in the Friendship", featuring exclusive bird life footage on as yet uncharted Golden Island. At 6 minutes per episode, the new Animated Series is a visual delight with acres of beautifully rendered landscapes and a huge amount of in-depth character development. If you, like me, wondered why Gale decided to break away from the Flock in Angry Birds Stella and start her own piggy dominion, wonder no more! She's just growing up to be a big bird, and grown-up birds have different expectations from avian youth. Alas, "growing up" causes its fair share of problems.
Angry Birds Stella: The Animated Series

Dawn of a New Era?
Or symbol of Paradise Lost? Comment below...

While the new Animated Series is obviously targeted at the preteen audience, the entire concept of studying how each character type responds to changing social expectations delves surprisingly deeply into matters related to juvenile and even adult psychology.Watch Episode 1 here on Toons.TV and see if you felt some sort of real life derived deja vu observing such issues as:- Gale, Mistress of Birds and Whose Feathers are a Shade of Royal Purple, appears to derive little pleasure from her flock and seeks to be in control of things. She is amused only when others go out of their way to serve her. - Other Birds see such behavior as arrogance and it leads to alienation. Soon after, what seems to be an unfortunate act of carelessness breaks apart hard-won friendships for good. - Gale walks away from the furious Flock, but derives happiness from the piggies accepting her as their queen without so much as an oink! When you were growing up, did you somehow find yourself being misunderstood and cast aside, and you had to seek comfort in solitude until you found a group that accepted you as you are? There you go, Gale is facing the exact same problem some of us went through in our younger days. Some of the above issues with Ms. Gale obviously point towards clinical depression and I believe with modern knowledge in mental healthcare, the Pigs' Invasion of Golden Bay could have been prevented in the first place. But nah! I'm just kidding, war had already been declared between the two animal species that never get along, so pop those pigs before they steal all our stuff! The Adventures of the Bad Princess continues in Episode 2 set to air this weekend! Check out the Sneak Porkview below - it's like a preview, only pigger...

After sampling the questionable delights of the pork side last weekend, the newly self-appointed leader of the non-existent Golden Island Redevelopment & Eggsploitation Corporation dispatched a wholly ridiculous yet wonderfully amazing mining machine in an attempt to retrieve a golden egg concealed for centuries within an ancient tree.As expected, pig-built machinery exhibited the usual lack of structural integrity and a single sonic wave from a gong was sufficient to cause the wacky contraption to fall to pieces. It however, had twin pig-driven hamster-derived flywheels for engines and the whole episode is worth watching for that wonderful demonstration of sustainable bacon energy! Check out Episode 3 - The Golden Egg right here. While Poppy's gong was highly effective at stopping the piggy mining machine, it appears to have fallen to pieces in Episode 4 - Rock On. What will Stella and her creative friends do to restore their anti-bacon garage band defenses?
